JDM's popularity has kept used Japanese vehicle prices annoyingly high

While I am considering a motorcycle for my commute, another car is still at the top of my list and I’ve been looking at a lot of tuner models. This gem right here is an 07 Forester 2.5 XT. Its stock except the dealer added 04 STi shocks and JDM springs. Don’t get me wrong its nice, but its over 10 years old, has over 100k on the odo and is selling for 15 grand. Its 5 grand more than it should be. Now if I’m wrong, and those springs and shocks cost about 5 grand to the price then I can see why. But its only worth about 11 grand.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve wrote before about !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! This one is no exception. It does have only 77 thousand on the odo, but the listed price is 21 grand. And that’s the cash price. Which means its even higher. I love Japanese tuner models as much as the next person, but these prices because that’s what a lot of people are into are a huge turn off. Especially if the dealer has done nothing or the cars are horribly modded. Anybody else in the market for something tunable and Japanese having a problem with the prices? (This could be a SoCal thing as well since there is a heavy JDM presence here.)

In terms of the Subaru, high price usually indicates a clean title, here in the northwest if you want a WRX/STI with a clean title your going to pay through the nose and have a hard time finding one. 95% have salvaged titles.

As for the evo, no clue. I can see some thunking of that since they don’t make them anymore they will hold their value? That’s what happened to the 98-02 V8 Camaros between 03-09. They really held their value until the 5th gen came out

I’m feeling this way about a lot of used cars in general. No one is taking off any serious money until 100k miles. And even then it’s like half price. Especially Tacomas. I’m in the market for one and dealers have asking prices above brand new MSRP for two year old models with 30k miles. I know they just gave you at least 15k for that lease! That means it should be like 22k maybe 25k, not 32k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like I’m going to have to buy a brand new truck.

I gave up on those. You can't find a stock one anymore. If it is for sale it's either garbage or modded to shit so it's garbage.

Toyota in general. I used to work at a car auction for dealerships and even the lowly Corollas held their value with a death grip.

cash for clunkers man. it destroyed the used car market, think it’s bad now? did you try to buy a used car from 2009 to 2013? it was even worse! soo many 99 to 2006 cars got crushed that should not have and it really fucked the market, drive used prices way above where they should be across the board. Oh you want a car that they literally made 100's of thousands of? sure here you go it has 110k and it’s yours for only $7800!

The used vehicle market in the US is weird. I can buy a used Ford Focus wagon for less in the Toronto area in Canadian dollars than I can in the US.

But then to buy new or almost new, it’s cheaper in the US usually.

Market drives price? Kind of how it goes.

We own an 03 Evo VIII (adult owned, maintained and unmodified) and a 2005 Cooper S. Both have held their price nicely. As someone who takes care of their stuff this makes me happy.

There’s a reason these haven’t sold yet, those prices are silly. It must be the local SoCal market.

Hell, you can import a Skyline GTS-T for about $10k these days.

A stock automatic came up on a car enthusiast page I follow on Facebook. He wanted like $6500 for it.

It’s all about the market and perceptions. Tacoma, STI, Evo, Wrangler - buy them used and sell them for the same price few years down the road. Asking prices at dealerships ar as high as original msrp or close and nowhere near the typical depreciation levels.

On the other hand, you have Abarths - as new with low miles for almost half off MSRP. Can't think of any other enthusiast model that depreciates that badly.

If that Foz is a 5spd it will sell. MSRP was $26,620 but the XT sport was had pretty low numbers, and even less with a manuel..

Maybe don’t use the low production, high performance models as a price guide? You could get a 07 Forester X for $5000 if you are willing to play the headgasket game. A non Evo Lancer should be quite affordable as well.

Thats very true. All those you mentioned don’t move at all its crazy. You have to go 10-12 years at least or find one that has a salvage title to get them for 10-15 grand. Abarths are a steal though. I routinely see 3 year old Abarths with less than 40 thousand on the odo for 13-15 grand.

Yea I want to go see it and see if I can talk them down. XTs are rare and its a 5 speed, one of 3 within 75 miles of me. Not down for the head gasket game in the X’s and the only non Evo Lancer I would ever consider is a Ralliart Sportback.

Yeah, I just spent $15200 - granted , 2014 GQ convertible - but if this one was available at the time of my purchase, I'd be driving it now. But I have to admit, roof down, windows down, Abarth noises = happiness. I am not regretting buying a convertible, at all.

I’ve been trying to justify the smallness of the Abarth convertible to purchase.

Hatchback has tons of room in the back. Bigger issue is space for glasses, phones, wallets etc in the front.

EVOs and STis I can kind of get... kind of. The problem with both of them is that their whole appeal was getting sports car performance with econobox accommodations at entry level luxury car prices. But with the lack of depreciation, the value just isn’t there.

Subaru prices, at least in Reno, are bat-ish crazy. And their owners are cult enthusiasts that drink their own Kool-Aid (TM). My “high maintenance” 996 has been in the shop at the most 1/3 as often as a friend’s Legacy Wagon Turbo, but call him on it, and he’ll just say “the only major problem I had was one little gasket.” Except, that “one little gasket” was the head gasket.

I want to love Subarus, I really do. But their owners make it so hard. The best value in Japanese cars right now are early 2000s Infinitis - G35X, Q45, etc. Don’t believe me? Try one, then compare it to a Subaru/non-Miata Mazda/Toyota/Honda in the same price range.

Subuaru “bros” as I like to think of them are annoying. A mixture of Saab loyalist and JDM tuner head I cant deal with them. And if I were to become a Subaru owner I would avoid them.

You’re right though about the value not being there anymore for them. Its gotten to the point that if any of the models are cheap, you have to be wary because 9 times out of 10 there’s something big wrong with it or it has a salvage title (and with the laws now, a salvage title can be for anything from a simple fender bender, to full on frame damage).

I thought about early 00's Infiniti’s but I never really cared for the first gen G35 sedan, I do love the coupe though but they are becoming harder to find stock. I loved the last gen Q45's as a teen, but the ones I’ve seen haven’t aged well at all. I’ve seen at least 5 recently with rear suspensions sagging.
